Also known as: Indian Mango, Manga
Botanical Name: Mangifera indica
Origin: India originally, now many tropical and sub-tropical regions esp. S.E. Asia
Description: These fast growing, evergreen trees are now grown commercially in many warmer countries around the world. They can reach a height of 30 to 35 metres and live for around 300 years. Mangoes are principally cultivated for their sweet tasting fruits which may be green, red orange or yellow depending on the variety grown. Few logs are of veneer quality, most Mango wood being used for solid furniture and small accessories. The reddish brown colour and slightly darker markings are, however, most attractive and veneer from the better logs is well worth consideration for special furniture and interior decoration. It is not always easy to find lengths over 2.50 metres and these longer logs usually fetch a slight premium. Mango is regarded as sustainable since it is normally replanted.
