Also known as: Scots Pine, Baltic Pine, Scandinavian Pine, etc., Scots Fir, Deal, Redwood
Botanical Name: Pinus sylvestris
Origin: Northern Europe and Russia
Description: This species can vary considerably in quality according to precise origin, but generally the better logs are selected for slicing into veneer. These will be fairly or totally free of knots, even and straight in the grain and usually have a pleasing crown structure. Some logs may show a degree of pinky-red colour in the heartwood. Corsican Pine (P. nigra) is sometimes available as veneer. Generally it is a little more yellow than Baltic and, being faster growing, is softer and wider grained.
