Rosewood, Mexican

Also known as: Bocote

Botanical Name: Cordia elaeagnoides

Origin: Central America

Description: Although commercially known as Mexican Rosewood, this is not a true rosewood, even though it has the appearance of being so. It belongs to the very large Cordia family, of which there are over 250 separate species. The logs are usually of small diameter and the resulting flat sliced veneer is therefore not wide, rarely exceeding around 20 cms. The background colour is generally dark biscuit to mid brown and the pronounced, almost black veining, usually with plenty of movement, gives this veneer its very individual look. Mainly used for special cabinet work.
