Also known as: Japanese Ash, Sen Ash

Botanical Name: Acanthopanax ricinifolius

Origin: China, Japan, Korea

Description: Sen is not a true Ash (Fraxinus spp.) and should not be confused with Tamo which is also referred to as Japanese Ash on occasion. Japan is the chief source of good material, which is exported in the form of sawn half logs. These are then either flat sliced or cut half-round so as to produce as much crown veneer as possible. Only the better grade logs tend to be imported and these generally show a pleasing and elegant structure, somewhat resembling a fine grained Ash. Colour varies from creamy white to light browny yellow with the overall appearance being one of understated quality.
